ENERGY
SUPER SAVERS-Some Facts about Foam Insulation
Maybe you've
never thought about this. When you build your new dream home, you'll probably
have a mortgage. It may take 15, 20 or maybe 30 years but eventually you
pay it off. Oh happy day!
However, when
you move into the home, you'll receive utility bills from the beginning
and for the rest of your life. In effect, you will have signed a lifetime
contract with your utility companies. Utility costs show no signs of coming
down so by the time your house payments stop, your energy bills could be
very substantial.
The best time
to fight those energy costs is while the house is being built.
In most parts of the country, proper and adequate insulation is the energy
saver key. In the walls, you have limited space for the insulation. Most
homes today will have 2x4 exterior walls. For very little more, have your
builder use 2x6 exterior walls. This not only gives you space for thicker
insulation, but makes for a stronger structure.
The type of
insulation can make a huge difference, because some kinds have a higher
performance level than others. This is rated as R-value. The "R"
stands for resistance to heat transfer. The higher the number following
the "R", the better. The highest R-value for home insulation is
the foam-in place type. However, it must be installed as the home is being
built or when remodeling calls for an addition.
Over and above
the advantage of a higher R-value, the foam goes into every nook and cranny,
leaving no voids. This means that air infiltration, a common thief of energy
dollars, is eliminated. Savings in utility bills can be as much as 50%.
This can also mean the overall equipment and tonnage required to heat and
cool the house can be reduced by as much as a third. Using spray foam insulation
such as SEALECTION 500, will cost more today than conventional insulation,
however, within a short period of 2 to 3 years, the energy saved will pay
for itself. This will make your home a SUPER ENERGY SAVER!
A home with
SEALECTION 500 foam insulation will be a quieter home, blocking outside
noises and deadening inside sounds.
David Lall,
a specialist in polyurethane foam insulation, points out that SEALECTION
500 spray foam insulation is also environmentally safe. There are no toxic
substances emitted after the product is applied. Also, SEALECTION 500 contains
no formaldehyde, asbestos or ozone depleting chemicals."
